Zoos and botanic gardens around the United States have celebrated Plant Conservation Day in previous years. Here are some highlights to provide inspiration for your own celebration!

 

San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo celebrated Plant Conservation Day in 2006 as part of its annual Garden Celebration in May. The Celebration was themed "Vanishing Plants: The Magic of Conservation." The weekend event featured many activities including a plant-oriented geo-caching hunt, a botanical bus tour, and special plant exhibits featuring threatened plants from around the world.

New England Tropical Conservatory

The New England Tropical Conservatory in Bennington, Vt., celebrated Plant Conservation Day in 2006 with activities that included tours, school workshops, radio talk shows and a local television program highlighting the plant conservation efforts of organizations in their community. The Conservatory also used its Plant Conservation Day celebration to kick off a new capital campaign.

 
 

The United States Botanic Garden featured a rare and endangered plant discovery cart as part of its Plant Conservation Day celebration.
 

United States Botanic Garden

In Washington DC, the United States Botanic Garden marked Plant Conservation Day 2006 by showcasing a plant conservation discovery cart for visitors. The cart featured rare and endangered plants from the Garden's collections. Visitors were also given copies of BGCI's A Plant Conservation Checklist for Gardeners to reinforce the conservation message. USBG also played host on Plant Conservation Day to a BGCI-sponsored symposium on plant conservation education. More than 40 participants from around the country took part.
